The History of Blue Dog Brahmans
Blue Dog Brahmans was established in January 2004 by Colin Ferguson
and daughter Bonnie Keough. The stud was named after a blue cattle dog pup
given to Colin, which he called Dog. Following the sale of the family commercial
property, Blackdown Station, in late 2003 the desire to stay in touch with
the cattle industry prompted Colin to purchase a small number of high quality
Brahman heifers at Stud sales in late 2003 and early 2004. This included FBC
D Miss Charmer Manso, and Lancefield Miss Meryl 2663. Also the pick of the
flush purchased at Gympie in June 2004 saw the arrival of Blue Dog Bundy in
January 2005 by LL Sugar Ely Manso 727. Hence Blue Dog Brahmans was born.
After his initial input, Colin decided to pay more attention to his racing
interests and handed the running of the stud over to Bonnie.
In March 2004 a small area of undeveloped land on the outskirts of Charters
Towers was purchased to establish the stud base. Over the following months
Bonnie with the assistance of her husband Shane began The Hideout's development.
12 months down the track found us able to run our own embryo programs with
extensive fencing and yard building having being completed. The following
months have seen further acquisition of breeding stock with semen being purchased
from overseas and within Australia.
Late 2006 seen our progression into reds purchasing a heifer
at the TL sale in Rockhampton, in calf to the South African bull NCC Serengeti.
In August 2006 the founder of Blue Dog Brahmans, Colin Ferguson passed away
in Mareeba after a short illness. Following this tragic loss Shane gave up
his career in the Mining industry to return full time to the Stud. Their son
Dean became a partner to the business.
